How Are End-of-Life Solar Panels Recycled? StokkermillSolar Technologies

The main focus of our presence in Frankfurt will be dedicated to the StokkermillSolar division, developed to address one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time: the sustainable recycling of end-of-life photovoltaic modules.

With the rapid expansion of solar installations since the 2000s, the volume of photovoltaic panels reaching end-of-life is increasing exponentially across the United States and global markets. Traditional recycling technologies are often too slow, costly, and heavily dependent on manual dismantling processes.

Stokkermill breaks this paradigm with a fully automated approach. Our system eliminates the need for pre-removal of the aluminum frame, significantly speeding up the entire processing line while reducing operational costs and improving overall plant efficiency.

StokkermillSolar recycling plants operate continuously, 24/7, require minimal maintenance, and achieve a material recovery rate of 98.5% by weight of incoming feedstock. This is among the highest performance levels currently available in mechanical and electromechanical photovoltaic recycling technologies.

Already showcased at the E-Waste World Conference & Expo 2025 in Frankfurt and Ecomondo 2024 in Rimini, this technology has attracted strong interest from recycling operators, investors, and institutional stakeholders. In June, it will take center stage at Booth J30.

Materials Can Be Recovered from Solar Panels? The Stokkermill Separation Process

The process developed by Stokkermill covers the full treatment chain, from automated feeding to final separation of valuable material streams.

Through mechanical delamination of glass and EVA layers, the system produces high-purity output fractions that meet market standards for secondary raw materials.

Aluminum – Recovered as a clean, furnace-ready fraction compliant with End-of-Waste standards. Stokkermill was recognized by Recycling Inside (September 2025) for its ability to convert photovoltaic aluminum into a directly reusable foundry-grade product.

Glass – Separated into multiple particle sizes. The coarse fraction achieves very high purity levels, while the fine fraction can be reused in ceramic manufacturing and other industrial applications.

Silicon – The finest fraction contains silicon powder with trace amounts of silver, representing a high-value input for further refining and recovery processes.

Copper – Recovered from junction boxes and conductive ribbons, producing a high-quality recyclable metal fraction.

Polymers (EVA and backsheet) – Recovered free from glass contamination and other impurities, suitable for use as high-calorific alternative fuels in energy recovery applications.

This approach maximizes the value of every component within the photovoltaic module, turning waste into high-quality secondary raw materials that support the circular economy.
